McMillen Jacobs Associates | Capitol Connector Tunnel

The Capitol Connector Tunnel is a new pedestrian and utility corridor that provides a secure, accessible connection between the Cordell Hull State Office Building and the Tennessee State Capitol. Unique features include intermediate vestibules, a pivot to provide a perpendicular connection at the portal (to align with the extension of existing elevator shafts and the new egress shaft at the tunnel terminus), and waterproofing on all sides. The aggressive schedule was driven by the need to relocate the state legislators prior to the 2018 legislative session. Excavation was performed using handheld pneumatic equipment and controlled blasting near historic, high‐profile structures.
